Cold Plunge Water MaintenanceUpdated 12 minutes ago
A clean cold plunge is an important part of a good recovery routine. While cold water naturally slows the growth of many microorganisms, cold water does not sterilise itself. Every time you enter your plunge, you introduce small amounts of sweat, skin oils, dead skin cells and other contaminants.
Over time, these can accumulate in the water and plumbing. Effective water care is about more than simply looking at whether the water is clear. Your VITAL+ filtration and ozone system is designed to significantly extend the life of your water, but it still needs regular maintenance and periodic water changes.
But...how does this system help keep your water clean?
| Filtration system | Filtration breakdown |
| Sediment filtration | The first stage helps capture larger particles and sediment before they continue through the system. |
| 20-micron filtration | The finer filter helps remove smaller suspended particles such as skin debris and other contaminants from the circulating water. |
| Ozone water treatment | Ozone is used to help treat the circulating water and break down organic contaminants. It works alongside filtration rather than replacing it. |
Together, these systems help keep your water cleaner for longer, but no filtration system removes the need for regular water care.Think of your plunge water as having a useful lifespan. Every use adds a small amount of organic material to the water.
As water gets older, the overall organic load can increase and a thin layer known as biofilm can develop on wet surfaces if cleaning and sanitation are neglected. Biofilm is particularly important because microorganisms can attach to surfaces and become harder to remove through normal circulation alone.
Water age, sediment and biofilm are recognised factors in maintaining hygienic water systems. This is why a plunge can sometimes look perfectly clear while still requiring maintenance. Allowing water to become excessively old or poorly maintained can lead to:
- Cloudy or discoloured water
- Unpleasant or unusual odours
- Slippery or slimy surfaces
- Increased organic buildup
- Biofilm formation within the tub or plumbing
- Reduced filter performance as contaminants accumulate
- Increased load on your filtration and circulation system
- Greater potential for microbial growth if sanitation is inadequate
Poorly maintained recreational water can also present a hygiene risk. Bacteria such as Pseudomonas and Legionella can be associated with poorly maintained water systems, which is why regular cleaning, circulation, sanitation and water replacement are important.
Important: clear-looking water isn't a guarantee that the water is hygienically maintained. Don't rely on appearance alone. The ideal frequency depends on your tub, filtration system, number of users, frequency of use, environment and water-care routine.
These are recommended starting points, not guarantees.
| VITAL+ System | Recommended starting point |
|---|---|
| Pod / Pro / Barrel / Arctic | Every 2–4 weeks |
| Cedar Solo | Every 2–4 weeks |
| Cedar Duo | Every 1–3 weeks with high-frequency use |
| Acrylic Tub | Every 2–4 weeks |
| Designer Tub | Every 2–4 weeks |
For example: One person using a plunge once a day will generally place much less load on the water than two people using it several times a day. If you're using your plunge more frequently, have multiple users, or experience warmer environmental conditions, you may need to change the water sooner.
Your daily habits make a big difference The easiest way to extend water life is to reduce what enters the water in the first place.
- Shower before you plunge: A quick shower before entering removes sweat, body oils, lotions, sunscreen and other contaminants that would otherwise enter the water. This is one of the simplest and most effective habits for keeping plunge water cleaner.
- Keep the lid on: Keep your VITAL+ lid or thermal cover on whenever the plunge isn't being used. This helps prevent leaves, dust, insects and other environmental contaminants from entering the water while also helping your system maintain temperature more efficiently.
- Keep your filters maintained: Your filtration system can only work effectively when the filters are clean and operating correctly. Inspect and clean or replace your filters according to the relevant VITAL+ maintenance schedule. If your water is becoming cloudy much faster than expected, check your filters before assuming you need a more frequent water change.
- Keep the tub and waterline clean: When you change the water, take the opportunity to wipe down the interior surfaces and waterline before refilling. This helps prevent organic buildup from becoming established on the surfaces of the tub.
Don't wait for your scheduled change if you notice:
- Cloudy water
The water is no longer clear or has changed colour. - Unusual odour
Don't try to mask a noticeable smell with additional treatment. Investigate the cause and consider changing the water. - Slippery or slimy surfaces
This can indicate organic buildup or inadequate sanitation. - Excessive debris
Check your filters and consider replacing the water if the problem persists. - Foaming or unusual surface activity
This can indicate a buildup of organic contaminants. - Water that simply doesn't seem right
If you're unsure about the condition of the water, it's better to drain, clean and refill than to keep extending its lifespan.
Here is a simple maintenance routine to get you started.

A properly maintained VITAL+ system can keep water fresh for weeks rather than requiring constant draining. Our filtration and ozone systems are designed to make regular plunge use more convenient—but they work best when combined with good user habits and routine maintenance.
Clean filters. Good hygiene. Proper circulation. Regular water changes. That's the formula for keeping your VITAL+ plunge clean, fresh and ready for your next session. When in doubt, change it out. If your water looks, smells or feels different from normal, don't try to stretch its lifespan.
Drain it, clean the tub and start again with fresh water.
