Chiller Is NoisyUpdated 3 hours ago

All chillers make some noise while running the compressor and fans are doing exactly what they're meant to. This guide helps you tell the difference between normal operating sound and a noise that's worth flagging to us.

What your chiller should sound like

A steady hum from the compressor and the whir of the fans is completely normal. As a guide to expected levels:

  • Ultra X1 / X2 Chiller — approximately 55 dB, similar to a quiet dishwasher
  • Chiller Max — approximately 66 dB, similar to a normal conversation

If the sound your unit makes is a consistent hum or whir in that range, it's operating as designed there's nothing to fix.

Think about where it's placed

A normal operating noise can still feel loud in the wrong spot. Before assuming there's a fault, consider the environment:

  • Is it near a wall, or close to a bedroom or living space? A unit that's perfectly normal can carry more than you'd expect through a wall it's worth asking whether you can hear it somewhere you'd rather not, like your bedroom at night.
  • Is it on a hard or hollow surface? Hard floors and hollow decking amplify vibration. A stable, level, solid surface keeps things quieter.
  • Is it level and stable? A unit that isn't sitting evenly can vibrate against its surface and sound louder than it is.

If the noise is normal but the placement is the issue, repositioning to a more suitable spot (further from living areas, on a solid level surface) usually solves it.

Sounds that aren't normal

Let us know if you notice any of the following as these can indicate a potential issue:

  • A loud grinding, rattling, or knocking sound
  • An intermittent clicking or snapping noise from the compressor area
  • Any unusual electrical buzzing or humming
  • A noise that has appeared suddenly when the chiller was previously quiet

When to contact us

If any of the sounds above apply, contact support and send us a short 15–20 second video of the chiller running, so our team can assess the sound directly. Include your order number and model, and we'll advise next steps promptly. A video genuinely speeds this up as describing a noise in words is hard, and hearing it lets us skip straight to diagnosis.
