Sauna Safety Guidelines

This article covers the SaunaPod Infrared, SaunaPod Steam, and XEN Full Spectrum Infrared Sauna.

Who should consult a doctor before using a sauna

Please speak with a healthcare professional before starting a sauna practice if you:

  • Have cardiovascular disease, arrhythmia, or uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Are pregnant
  • Have multiple sclerosis or any condition where heat worsens symptoms
  • Have active infections or a fever
  • Have open wounds
  • Are on medications that affect blood pressure, heart rate, sweating, or circulation
  • Are under 12 years of age

See When to Seek Medical Advice for a full checklist covering both cold and heat therapy.

SaunaPod Steam: before every session

  • Check the steam hose is free of clogs, kinks, or folds. Steam must flow freely from the SmartSteam unit to the tent dispenser.
  • Confirm the SmartSteam lid is firmly twisted clockwise until the grooves fully engage. An unsealed lid causes steam leakage and reduced output.
  • Check the water level. Do not exceed the MAX fill line. Overfilling causes improper operation or damage to the steam chamber.
  • Keep the steam unit, hot hose, and pod away from children and pets during operation.

SaunaPod Infrared: before every session

  • Ensure all 6 panels are connected per the user manual.
  • Confirm the remote is functioning and temperature is set correctly. Do not leave the unit on the timer function unattended.
  • Keep the pod away from children and pets during operation.

XEN Sauna: before every session

  • Ensure the sauna is fully assembled and in good condition. Check the door seal and all panel connections.
  • Never use the sauna if the power cord is damaged. Contact support before using.
  • Maintain at least 30 cm clearance from walls, curtains, and any combustible material.
  • Ensure the sauna is on a flat, stable surface away from water sources.
  • Plug into a dedicated earthed power outlet only. Do not use extension cords or power boards.
  • Do not operate if water has entered any electrical component. Contact support immediately.

During your session

Temperature and time guidelines:

ProductRecommended temperatureMaximum session length
SaunaPod Steam40–50°C30 minutes
SaunaPod Infrared50–65°C45 minutes
XEN Sauna40–65°C (build up gradually)30–40 minutes

Start at the lower end of the temperature range if you are new to sauna use and build up gradually across sessions. Always exit immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseous, lightheaded, or unwell. Sit in a cool area and rehydrate.

Do not use any sauna while drowsy, sleepy, or under the influence of alcohol. Essential oils (SaunaPod Steam only): Add essential oils only to the small internal steam dispenser inside the tent. Never add oils directly to the external steam chamber as this will cause damage and malfunction.

After your session

SaunaPod Steam:

  • Turn off the SmartSteam unit and unplug from the wall.
  • Leave the drain hose open to allow condensation to drain fully.
  • Open the zip and air out the tent for at least 15–20 minutes.
  • Do not store the tent sealed with moisture inside as this encourages mould.

SaunaPod Infrared:

  • Unplug from the wall after every session.
  • Open the zip and allow heat and moisture to dissipate fully before closing or folding.
  • Ensure the tent is completely dry before storage.

XEN Sauna:

  • Turn off and unplug from the wall after every session.
  • Leave the door open for 15–20 minutes to dissipate heat and moisture before closing.
  • Do not store or close the sauna with moisture inside the cabin.

XEN Sauna: electrical safety

  • Never modify the sauna's wiring or attempt to repair electrical components yourself.
  • If the fuse trips, do not reset it without first identifying the cause. See XEN Sauna: Fuse Trip or Circuit Breaker for guidance.
  • Do not operate if water has entered the electrical components. Unplug and contact support.
